The Fine Arts program at St. Raymond School includes lessons in art, music, dance, and theater. It has been lead by Mrs. Deeadra Idokogi for almost 10 yrs. This year 5th grade students received a 10 week lesson in Ballroom Dance as a part the Fine Arts program through a partnership with the Connelly Access Program. They paired up to learn Merengue, Foxtrot, Rhumba, Tango, and Swing. Students also explored different aspects of ballroom performance such as custom design and formal wear. They even wrote poetry and journals expressing how they felt about what they were learning.
Gael W. is a 5th grade student who takes dance classes outside of school. When asked about the ballroom lesson offered at school, she says “It was fun. I liked Rhumba the most because the steps are different and it’s for all ages.”
At the end of the program, the 5th grade class performed a showcase for their schoolmates in Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade. The class was so successful that the school formed a Ballroom Dance Team. The team competed in the Dancing Classrooms Philly Competition. Parents and school staff were on hand to cheer them on. They placed 2nd in the Semi-Final and but they won the Grand Prize in our hearts!
